Orientation on Environmental Health & Implementation of Hospital Waste Management Rules, 2014

Punjab is lucky enough to have hospital waste management rules, 2014 for the sound implementation of hospital waste across the Punjab. Hospital waste is special type of the waste carrying high potential of infections (HIV, Hepatitis B & C) and injury. Inadequate and improper handling, collection, storage, transportation & final disposal may have serious public health consequences and a significant impact on the environment (soil, water & air). 

Realizing the gravity of the issue for the safe disposal of the infectious waste, HWMR are being implemented in the Punjab which is an example amongst the provinces. Policy & Strategic Planaing Unit has implemented HWMR, 2014 in 15 districts through World Bank’s agreed DLI adopting standard medical protocols and the further support for the provision of HCWM supplies and equipment has started & implemented by infection control program across the province. All health care workers (Administrators, doctors, nurses, paramedics & auxiliary staff) are being trained regarding the subject matter. 

For the capacity building of health administrator (MSc- Medical Administration), the commandant  Armed Forces Post Graduate Medical Institute Rawalpindi (PGMI), had approached to honorable secretary P & SHD and after the approval delegate(Commandant & 35 course students) was upraised on “Hospital waste management as incorporated and implemented via HCWM Rules, 2014 by Government of Punjab”. The seminar was chaired by Program Director PSPU. Fruitful lecture was delivered on the subject matter by Program Manager Hepatitis Control Program. The hospital waste management hierarchy was elaborated in term to implemented process from segregation to environment friendly disposal of the infectious waste. The session was closed with the special thanks from Director General Health services Punjab on behalf of the worthy Secretary P&SHD and distribution of the commandant’s shields to program director PSPU & speakers.
